FIRST combines the excitement of sports with science and technology to create a unique varsity Sport for the Mind™. FIRST helps young people discover the rewarding and engaging world of innovation and engineering. It is a sport where students play with and learn from the pros, designing and building a robot in a fascinating real-world professional experience using the industry’s most current technologies while having their robots compete in a sporting game challenge. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of 25 students or more are challenged to raise funds, design a team “brand,” hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. It’s as close to “real-world engineering” as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team. Read more about FIRST Core Values: Gracious ProfessionalismTM and CoopertitionTM
FRC Students get to:
- Learn from professional engineers
- Build and compete with a robot of their own design
- Learn and use sophisticated software and hardware
- Compete and cooperate in alliances and tournaments
- Earn a place in the World Championship
- Qualify for more than $14.8 million in college scholarships
Unique to the program is the concept of CoopertitionTM, where teams compete with each other but also assist each other when needed. This is inherent in the design of the game, in which 2 alliances of 3 teams each are randomized throughout the qualifying matches. So, teams help each other succeed in order to ensure that all teams in their alliances will do well. This has a profound impact not only on students, but on the adults working with the teams.

Q: When and how do we sign up for our team’s Chairman’s Award Presentation (2013 FRC – Pittsburgh), and when/how are the times announced?A: All interviews will be conducted on Friday. Judges will provide a sign up sheet early afternoon on Thursday that lists the open times for CA interviews and shows the room to be used for interviews on Friday. Teams interviewing for the CA award can then sign up for a time slot that does not conflict with their match schedule. All CA teams should have signed up for an interview shortly after the opening ceremonies on Friday. Judges may ask the announcer to make sure teams have signed up if they see missing teams Friday morning. If teams have special AV needs they may visit the interview room on Thursday to make sure they have all the right plugs and cables.
Safety Glasses will not be given out to team members, mentors, etc who are in team apparel. FIRST policy is that each team is responsible for providing safety glasses for all of their team members, coaches, parents, etc. This has been announced by FIRST numerous times. It is especially important with this year’s game that safety is a high priority, and safety glasses are extremely important.

Information on Hotels
This year we’re pleased to announce that Pittsburgh is participating in the FIRST Hotel Program for regional events!
If anyone associated with your team will be staying in a hotel during the Pittsburgh Regional, I highly recommend and encourage reserving rooms thru this program:
http://www.firstchampionshiphousing.com
Please note that for hotels located in downtown Pittsburgh: ask about cost of parking; beware of rush hour traffic Thursday and Friday mornings, in particular.
Why reserve hotels thru this program?
It benefits you …
- Best in class pricing. If a team finds a lower hotel cost at a participating hotel, then the hotel will match cost to all FIRST participants. (Costs obtained by sites such as Priceline where the hotel is not named are excluded)
- Value added amenities are included such as free internet, breakfast, parking at select participating hotels.
… and it benefits FIRST regional events, too! :)
Revenue is directed back to the Regional event to help offset regional event costs – with no difference in cost to you!
